An all-new Gmail app for Android phones has arrived, bringing a host of new features to handsets running Google’s operating system.

Compatible with handsets running Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, the revamped app adds the Priority Inbox feature from the desktop version to enable users to keep important messages separate from less urgent mails.

For additional convenience, mails flagged as being pressing will also now appear at the top of the screen.

Also new to the app is a redesigned header, access to quoted text and improved message replies, a Google blog post stated.

The search giant added that it has launched the app so that Gmail updates are no longer tied to Android version releases – a move that’s pretty prudent in the light of the difficulty that some carriers have experienced in rolling out new iterations of the OS in the UK.

Android phone owners can download the app now from Android Market for free.
