The creators of the hit Gears of War series are working on an iPhone 4 title running on Unreal Engine 3.

The game, currently dubbed ‘Project Sword’, is a first-person action-adventure title and is fully 3D, as shown off in a tech demo by Epic boss Mike Capps in Apple’s San Francisco event last night. The gorgeous graphics caused even Steve Jobs to proudly exclaim: “It’s on a phone!”.

Chair Entertainment who previously worked on the critically acclaimed Shadow Complex for Xbox Live Arcade is developing the title under Epic’s supervision.

From the demo, the game looks to be set in a medieval period and has similar aesthetics to the Fable series on the Xbox. Although no combat was demonstrated, given the game’s title and first-person nature, it will most likely involve swordplay similar to the Elder Scrolls series.

Despite the lack of any physical controls, the game appears to play well using the iPhone touch screen. What’s more impressive is the fact that it ran without a single hiccup during the demo, a testament to both the iPhone 4’s hardware and the scalability of the Unreal Engine.

iPhone 4 owners can experience the demo themselves by picking it up right now from the App Store (look for ‘Epic Citadel’). Although no firm release date was given, the full game is expected to be out in Q4.
