Orange has started rolling out Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, to HTC Desire owners, bringing a host of new features to the handset.

The over the air update started last night and takes up around 86Mb of space on devices, according to a Tweet from OrangeHelpers.

The carrier’s customer support Twitter account also advised that the rollout will be gradual, meaning that some Desire owners may have to wait longer for the update than others.

Orange customers have yet to report problems with the service, apparently endorsing Orange’s decision to delay the rollout after HTC encountered teething problems.

Froyo brings a slew of enhancements to Android mobiles, including better battery life and slicker social networking with comments on Facebook updates.

Also new is 720p HD video recording, Flash 10.1 support in the browser, plus some new HTC apps such as a custom calculator and a tethering application that enables users to share the handset’s 3G signal with other web enabled devices.

I've been checking my phone for updates almost every other day since the start of august. I finally hear the update is available, then my phone says no update is available... I haven't been this impatient since the OS 3.0 update on my old iPhone 3g.

The latest information (according to the Orange support pages), is that only Desire handsets with software number 1.22.61.1 can currently apply the Froyo update.

Those of us with the older software version number 1.15.61.10 will have to wait until next week for HTC to release a separate update to patch the software to 1.22.61.1 before we can down load the Froyo update. :(

Still nonthing. My contract will be up before this update arrives! It only has another 18 months to run :-)

Has Orange removed the garbage they put in the 2.1 release?

Good information Marcus. I'm still waiting for the update but I am running software version 1.15.61.10 so will need to wait for the other software update before being able to update to Froyo. Here's the Orange support page with some more info about which bits of the bloatware they have removed.

got update on friday - not impressed. orange photo app keeps running have to force stop once. i have used apps cannot kill them with app killer have to force stop. didnt have to do any of that before and battery life not as good.

spoke to orange the first rep told me that it shouldn,t happen so the software might have got corrupted by the update. he said he would replace the phone but i needed to go to an orange shop to confirm the problems first. i did this today (sunday) but when i rang orange back the lady i spoke to said that replacing the phone would not cure the problem and refused to replace it.

she said that another phone would have the same problem so i had to put up with it. I am just wondering if they adopt the same cavalier attitude when i refuse to pay the bill. she also said that i should have read the terms before i updated and it was my choice not theirs to update so if like me you have been waiting for this update be warned: just like the other branded phones with bloatware it will downgrade the phone in my opinion not upgrade it. Then you will have to deal with a rep who has a generic phone not a company bloatware phone who couldn,t care less

Works fantastically for me. No problems what so ever with either the update to 2.1.2 or the second update to 2.2

Same problem as above. Orange photo keeps running. Can app kill it, but restarts after a while. Will search net for cure becuase orange help is useless.

No problems with updating to 2.2, all settings were restored. The only thing I found was that the camera screen interface was the same? I thought this was meant to upgraded too. Any thoughts on this from anyone?

Guy from Switzerland: From comments on www.allo.ch it looks as if Orange Switzerland WON'T be rolling out this upgrade. It is not in their plans.

If you're one of the many unsatisfied Orange Switzerland customers, call and write to them to complain (if you can find out how to get through to them without using their premium pay for help service).
