The Froyo upgrade for HTC Desire owners on Orange has been delayed, the carrier has confirmed via its Twitter feed.

The latest version of Google’s operating system had been due to arrive on the handsets by mid-September.

However, Orange’s Connor Maples has revealed that HTC had experienced “issues with the update” that mean that owners will be waiting for a while longer.

However, the problems are now resolved and, pending final partner approval, the rollout ought to begin imminently, he added.

He Tweeted: "Apols for the delay guys. We've been told to expect it shortly – think days rather than weeks!"

The latest compatibility problems with updating Android phones come after O2 this week abandoned an upgrade for the Desire and Dell Streak which reportedly temporarily rendered the handsets inoperable.

At the root of the delays are ensuring that the new iterations are compatible with manufacturers’ custom skins and carrier’s services.

Thank you so much for giving this particular update. I do request Orange, however, to try and explain the situation to their customers on time to avoid waiting in the unknown. that really requires high levels of patience.

I've got an Orange contract HTC Desire and have had Android 2.2 for about 2 months ? works brilliantly, no problems to report.

Just installed another update yesterday for speech to text, so you dont have to keep typing those pesky emails and texts

FROYO UPDATES HAVE BEEN A NIGHTMARE FOR EVERY SINGLE NETWORK. AT LEAST ORANGE ISN'T TRYING TO ROLL IT OUT BEFORE IT'S READY. I'M LOOKING AT YOU O2.

Why do you moan so much about updates? It costs you nothing and get loads of cool stuff. So you have to wait a while, so what?

He doesn't get anything - that's his point. HTC released the upgrade months ago, so we're just waiting for Orange to finish putting their rubbish all over it and breaking stuff. They could have just put out HTC's version and been both fast and delivered something people actually want, rather than unwanted branding.

With regards to Orange Desire owners with 2.2 update already. I can confirm that this is true. I have a Orange Desire purchased from an Orange store (orange label and everything on the back). My work friend also Orange Desire from a Orange shop - even Orange label on the back too.

However he received the update last month. Via the settings/version info it clearly says that he has 2.2 He also has various options to save/install to his internal memory card etc.

No ideas how he has it and I dont.

2.2 arrived today, complete with wifi hub app: my reason for going for an Android phone. Only had it for 5 days so far, so pretty pleased.
