O2 HTC Desire owners are experiencing serious problems updating their handsets to the latest 2.2 version of Android, reports suggest.

The carrier began rolling out the new iteration of Google’s operating system this morning.

However, according to Tech Radar “nearly every user” who has installed it has found that their phone is “freezing at the boot stage”.

Some of those affected claim that this has rendered the phone temporarily unusable.

The apparent problems with the upgrade come after rollouts of earlier editions were beset by lengthy delays, as manufacturers struggled to ensure compatibility with their custom user interfaces.

Further postponements have arisen from networks experiencing similar problems.

Among the improvements Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, is due to bring to the handset are smoother, faster multi-tasking and HD video recording, to bring it in line with the huge-selling Samsung Galaxy S.
