3 has been forced to withdraw the Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, update for HTC Desire owners, after a number of users reported problems using their phones having downloaded the new iteration of Google’s operating system.

A spokesperson for the carrier confirmed that it had pulled the update, which was rolled out for the phone back on October 14th, in a statement to ZDnet.

Apparently, some Desire users were no longer able to access the Android Market – Google’s online smartphone software store - after completing installation.

Prior to recent developments, 3’s Android 2.2 rollout had been problem-free – especially compared to some of the travails suffered by other networks’ customers. It’s not yet clear what is causing the problem.

Android updates across UK networks have almost uniformly been subject to delays, with issues arising when trying to ensure compatibility with carrier’s services.

Manufacturers, meanwhile, have been hamstrung by glitches that arose when attempting to make new versions of Android compatible with custom user interfaces.

Was does that mean if for people who have already installed 2.2? I've had 2.2 installed since I received my Desire from "Three" a month ago, it was the first thing I did. Now in the last 4-5 days Android Market has started playing up, cancelling downloads, pausing them, either in Wifi or 3G mode.

Are they going to create a 2.2 to overwrite the 2.2 I have, or are they going to re-imburse me the cost of my downloads and time setting the phone up to roll it back to 2.1 and then re-install 2.1

    Any comments or views??

How do you mean 'reset' it Rob? I've cleared the caches for marketplace, download manager and few other running services, marketplace works better now but still intermittent, phone works a treat other than market place issues, haven't had any other issues with 2.2 What about you?

So even if 3 hold off with it and subject the update to longer tests than ever the upates still go wrong. Google NEEDS TO SORT THIS OUT.

I would suggest backing up and factory resetting. Major OS upgrades can leave behind / keep unwanted things on any platform. If you're experiencing issues, I'd definitely suggest trying it out.

My desire is imported from UK .. and I faced similar issues too after the 2.2 update.. my Android Market vanished.. and after going thru a few threads online.. i figured out the phone needed a hard factory reset.. I did it and Market reappeared.. 2.2 is not that great..

Internet's pinchand zoom is not smooth at all.. has become v laggy... videos playback is completely messed up.. just the audio goes and video stops. so i have started compressing all videos as 3gp which plays without issues.. but again quality has gone for a toss...

there are a few good things like HD recording / wifi hotspots etc...

wish they had QCd it throughly before releasing..
