Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.1 update: too little, too late?

Sony Ericsson has taken to its official product blog to show off Android 2.1 working on the top-of-the-range Xperia X10. Continuous HD autofocus, more homescreens, power-saving widgets and added icon space are all being lined up alongside regular 2.1 improvements such as integrated mailboxes, Google Goggles and Exchange support.

This would have been exciting back at the phone’s launch in April. But the update isn’t due until the end of October and even then it depends on the networks giving it the green light.

That means the X10 could still be stuck on Android 1.6 until the end of 2010. By that point, Android 3.0 Gingerbread will doubtless have been unveiled, while all of the X10’s key rivals, including the HTC Desire, Desire HD and Desire Z, will have Android 2.2 sitting on board.

How it’s come to this is baffling and why Sony Ericsson is bothering to try out Android 2.1 is of great concern. Why not just go straight to FroYo? It seems the X10 might not be able to play nice with the very latest Android software, which means a phone that offers great promise in the hardware stakes is incapable of competing with other Android phones.

The X10 is, frankly, finished. Samsung and HTC have both been surging ahead when it comes to Android, but Sony Ericsson’s failure to keep pace with the software changes shows that its phones, no matter how great they look, cannot go toe-to-toe and expect to win.

That’s not to say Samsung and HTC haven’t had problems. That latter is still battling to get Android 2.2 onto the Desire. But at least that phone, which landed at the same time as the X10, had 2.1 from the get go. HTC’s issues with FroYo have largely been put down to its insistence on using HTC Sense.

It would be hard to argue that Sony Ericsson’s Timescape and Mediascape skins haven’t caused similar problems, except that the X10 is still stranded on Android 1.6. Sony Ericsson needs to release this upgrade stat and then ensure a further boost is ready almost immediately in order to keep the X10 relevant.

But that’s unlikely to happen, leaving it floundering as newer phones burst onto the scene. If you’re an X10 owner, this is bad news, especially as this 2.1 upgrade was supposed to happen months ago.

Google also needs to ensure that such updates are rolled out properly. This delay not only reflects badly on Sony Ericsson, it reflects badly on the Big G too. There needs to be a more uniform approach in getting these software boosts out and Google needs to get OEMs round the table to fix the problem. Otherwise, Android fragmentation will only gather pace, leaving itself wide open to attacks from Apple and Microsoft.

Please. I just got this phone, and I love it. I have ZERO complaints. It works great, sounds great, and looks great. Declaring a phone is "finished" because of some ridiculous operating system non-issue is ridiculous. Pull your head out of your backside and realize that nobody but tech columnists and "have-to-get-the-newest-thing" gadget geeks care about that kind of minutiae.

Im an X10 Mini Pro eagerly awaiting the 2.1 update. To be honest, I am not bothered what version it has, it does what I need on 1.6 and while it is frustrating to know that my 6 week old phone is way out of date, it doesnt mean it doesnt work.

Well this is your opinion and frankly no one cares about it! Who are you to accuse a great company such as se to be failing. Did you read about the latest profits that the company gained which was 49 million euro compared to last year which was a loss of 164 million!! It would be acceptable if you wrote this article last year. But no offense this is rubbish and se are winning the game again. Lacking behind a little bit with the software doesn't mean at all that they are failing.

The X10 is greater than ever, and a lot of customers are willing to buy this baby after this upgrade, if you simply hate se, well guess what? It's not our problem.

Good luck with your laggy samsung :)

Show's how much you know.. Gingerbread is going to be 2.5 and 3.0 will be called something else and will be designed for tablets.

@A.C. I suppose you're still using Windows 98? I'll tell you who else might care about such minutiae...oh, I don't know, maybe the entire cell phone industry to include programmers.

If you're fine with it then I'm sure it is a non-issue with you, but wait until Android 1.6 apps start to go the way of the Dodo or perhaps miss out on some really cool apps that can only leverage 2.1+ (Skype for example).

I like my phone too, but I'm never opposed to moving forward in progress...and new firmware / ROMs make extending hardware lifecycle possible while improving performance.

@A.C. If you believe the X10 has no problems, then you're wrong. The screen has massive problems dealing with any water--be that rain, a foggy screen on a cold morning or moisture on my fingers.

No 2.1 also means no multi-touch which is a massive killer for me.

Also the battery life is appalling. I have to turn everything off constantly in order to get the bloody thing to stay on longer than 12 hours.

I feel disappointed with my X10. Barring the screen issue (I should have gotten an AMOLED screen and I knew it, but that's my fault), it is a very solid phone. But while my friends are using flash and downloading free apps that simply aren't available to me, I feel like I'm stuck in the dark ages. With at least another year on my contract, I almost feel like I've been conned.

I am a bit disappointed with the delay of 2.1 but i am more than happy for the reason that all apps r working fine on my cell.I have friends who own HTC , DROID etc and are facing a tons of problems regarding apps & many other things.I am sure 2.1 of SE will be better as compared to 2.2 of all other brands

In regards to the issues of 1.6 being on the x10, yeah that is limiting us, theres no doubt about that. But take into consideration what the Xperia actually has built into it. The AMOLED AND Super AMOLED screens have been tested against Xperia's screen and the Xperia's screen came out on top. Why? Because Sony Ericsson has always given amazing hardware.

So yeah, we're behind in the update. The difference is that when we GET the update, we can at least say that our phone will run 2.1 better than any HTC or Samsung can run 2.2

It's all a matter of your point of view. We wait longer, but the spoils are all the sweeter.

I bought an X10 back in May. One of the biggest mistakes I've made since purchasing an N96.

The phone itsself looks nice, but the firmware on it is slow and buggy. In fact, have SE employed a bunch of ex-Nokia engineers? It would certainly seem so.

This will be the last SE thing I ever purchase. They can go to hell for all I care. Their customer support is non-existent. They could have brought out 2.1 some time ago if they hadn't insisted on putting their own rubbish software on it too.

Bunch of idiots. Hope they go bust.
