Enter the Apple App Store and it’s easy to get lost in the sea of apps. September has seen the arrival of an even more dizzying number of titles on the iPhone vying for your buck. But fear not, we have painstakingly picked the ten best we think will please most users. Here they are:

1. Mirror's Edge

Mirror’s Edge is a platformer/adventure that puts players in the shoes of a female runner trying to get away from a seemingly perfect society that is anything but.

While the iPhone edition ditches the first-person perspective of the original in favour of a side-scrolling view, it retains every bit of the gravity-defying nous of the console version, providing players with hours of adrenaline-pumping chases. The jaw-dropping visuals push the iPhone 4’s Retina display to the very max.

2. Beyond Ynth

In Beyond Ynth, you follow the journey of a little bug named Kribl who must recover some shiny diamonds that were stolen by the Four Dark Spiders of the Apocalypse (it’s a mouthful, I know), and in doing so, bring light back to the kingdom of Kriblonia.

It’s an incredibly polished puzzle/platformer featuring 80 fun levels, each with an increasingly challenging contraption that will test your mettle but give you a great sense of accomplishment when you solve them.

The hand-drawn illustrations are charming and the music is fantastic. There’s very little to not like about this gem. Go pick it up right now.

3. TIme Crisis 2nd Strike

Time Crisis 2nd Strike is an arcade shooter and a follow-up to the first Time Crisis on the iPhone. Your goal is to basically shoot everything on sight as quickly and as stylishly possible, and in the process, save the world, of course.

While it lacks the light gun periphery the series is best known for, the on-rails experience of the arcade titles translates nicely enough on the iPhone touchscreen for an enjoyable but challenging experience that requires fast reflexes.

There are three modes to play in: the episode mode, which offers ten action-packed stages and the time attack and score assault modes to beat stages you’ve already completed with a better time and score.

4. QuickQ

QuickQ lets you create a temporary playlist to match the mood you are in. Whether you’re trying to get some work done or fall asleep on the train, with this app you can quickly queue a bunch of songs and put an end to being annoyingly interrupted by your Spanish instruction tapes.

It might sound too simplistic, but that’s the whole point of this app and you won’t realise how much you need it until you’ve tried it.

5. LiveDrive

Tired of syncing your music with iTunes or running out of storage? Frustrated by complex video encoding gobbledygook? Keep forgetting your flash drive at home?

LiveDrive is a cloud storage solution that takes care of all that and won’t cost you an arm and a leg. With unlimited storage and bandwidth for just £3.95 per month, this really is a bargain compared to the likes of DropBox. Give it a try.

6. Awareness! The Headphone App

Awareneess is an app that gives you spidey sense, in a manner of speaking, by utilising your headphones to pick up surrounding noises, and enhancing those that may be important, and potentially life saving, to you, such as horns, sirens, shouts, alarms, announcements – pretty much anything.

Not that there’s any excuse for listening to annoyingly loud music in public. But with this nifty little app you might just avert a fatal disaster, and live to dance another day.

7. Didiom

Didiom allows you to stream music directly from your desktop to your iPhone. While that might sound similar to what LiveDrive is offering, Didiom is dedicated specifically to streaming audio files and does not require you to upload anything beforehand, which means it costs less (just $9.99 per annum) and works faster, too.

So if music is all you need and have plenty of it, this is an excellent way to ensure you can take every last bit of your George Michael collection with you wherever you go.

8. Kinetic

Kinetic is a health and fitness app designed to help you get more out of your outdoor activities, such as running, cycling, hiking and walking.

You can choose from a range of training programs, designed by a former London Marathon winner, for both beginner and immediate levels, or set your own personal targets. It then uses the iPhone’s GPS tracking functionality to measure the distance, altitude and the speed at which you’ve travelled, all of which is automatically recorded in your training history.

The interface is very intuitive and can be fully customised with modules that matter to you the most. Simply put, this is an indispensable companion for the health conscious users.

9. The Ball Is Too Fast, The Game Is Too Slow, The Name Is Too Long

We felt this app deserved an entry on our list just for that name alone. We’re not sure if it’s the longest on the app store. But it’s ridiculously long, that’s for sure.

For convenience (see, we’re regretting it already), let’s call it BITSTGITSTNITL. It’s essentially a mirrored BrickBreaker title, where instead of just playing by yourself, you can take on a human or AI opponent on the other side, air hockey style. The difference is that there are randomly generated blocks in the middle that you have to destroy before you score any points. In some levels the blocks regenerate so you have stay alert.

It’s a simple but fun twist on a classic and great way to kill time if you’re bored, which is probably about now.

10. FIFA 11 by EA SPORTS

FIFA 11 is the latest iteration in EA’s flagship football franchise, bringing you more on-screen action and less of the off-screen controversy of the promiscuous nature that we’ve come to expect from our Premier League stars.

With high-fidelity graphics, a licensed roster of more than 500 teams from every major league in the world, plus 35 stadiums, this is arguably the most authentic soccer experience you can get on the platform.

The gameplay is simple and really easy to pick up, and with multiple game modes, including a season and a tournament mode to guide your team all the way to silverware glory, you’ll get more than your money’s worth here.
