Angry Birds for Windows Phone 7 smartphones won’t arrive for at least another five weeks, game devs Rovio have confirmed.

The casual gaming phenom has been a massive hit on the iPhone, Android and on Nokia Symbian 3 devices and has crossed over so convincingly to the mass market that a line of merchandise is expected to be among the biggest selling toys this Christmas.

However, thus far owners of Windows Phone 7 handsets have been shut out of the party. And Rovio has revealed that the situation won’t be changing anytime soon.

Responding to a Tweet from a fan, the games maker has disclosed that WP7 gamers “will not [get the game] this year”, explaining that the delay is because it “takes a lot of work to do WP7”.

However, things are looking a lot brighter for Nokia N8 and C7 owners. Rovio has pledged to deliver an update for the Symbian 3 edition of Angry Birds in December.

Next month will also see a simultaneous cross-platform release of the Christmas edition on Android, Nokia’s smartphone platform and the iPhone.

Wouldn't surprise me if Rovio is basically deliberatley dragging its feet after Microsoft annoyed them at the WP7 laucnh with the unofficial Angry Birds game.

Interesting. Just wanted to clarify a point. "However, thus far owners of Windows Phone 7 handsets have been shut out of the party. And Rovio has revealed that the situation won’t be changing anytime soon."

Ummmm.... really? Angry birds not appearing on a phone means that phone is shut out of the entire casual gaming phenomena? Angry birds is a fun game... but isn't that stretching it a bit? :D. I have a Phone 7 (actually... I'm a developer and develop for ALL of them) and it already has MANY casual games.

The truth is that many XBox Live XNA game can be ported to the phone simply by changing the controls to phone controls... which means since XBox live has tons of games, you will be seeing hundreds of top quality casual games appearing on the phone. This is a benefit iPhone and Android simply don't have - if a developer is building a casual game to reach the millions of Xbox360 fans, they get a "freebee" by also being able to run it on the Windows Phone 7, even if the installed base of the phone is lower.

So, no... Phone 7 is definately not shut out of the casual market. There are already so many good casuals games out there I can't keep up.

@CharlesC Hi Charles. There are indeed some pretty smart games for WP7 smarties. And some of those are pretty ace for the less committed gamer. But that doesn't change the fact that the year's biggest mobile gaming phenom has yet to show. Think you've misunderstood me.

The christmas edition known as Seasons hasn't been released on Symbian^3. It was only released to iOS and Android. Still waiting for the update to the original to get more levels for Symbian.
