Owners of the HTC Wildfire will be pleased to know that the latest, most delicious version of the Android operating system, AKA Froyo, will be landing on their handsets "in the coming weeks”.
According to The Inquirer, the Taiwanese smartphone maker has confirmed that two-thirds of its mid-range Android handsets will be updated to version 2.2 shortly, with the HTC Wildfire and Legend leading the charge.
Both handsets have been stuck with Android 2.1 since launch but will be receiving an over-the-air update as soon as they have been tested by carriers. Owners of the unlocked versions of the smarties can expect to download it right off the bat using the HTC Sync software.
Key features of Android 2.2 include 720p video recording, Flash Player support, and USB tethering, plus a number of performance upgrades such as improved speed and battery life.
Unfortunately, Wildfire owners' jubilation may be short-lived as the the next iteration of Android, version 2.3, or Gingerbread, is already being prepped for release sometime next month. So it seems they are still likely to stay one step behind their more high-end counterparts.
