A high-ranking Sony Ericsson executive has hinted that the spate of rumours about a Sony PlayStation branded smartphone are on the money, following years of speculation that the company is looking to leverage gamers’ brand loyalty to Sony's best-selling range of consoles.

Most recently speculation surrounded snaps sourced by Engadget of a handset that nodded towards the PSPGo with its shoulder buttons and a console-esque directional pad, but took just as many design cues from the best-selling Xperia X10, whose Android operating system it is believed to share.

SE has stayed characteristically tight-lipped as to the veracity of the images. However, in an interview with the super serious US business daily the Wall Street Journal Chief Executive Bert Nordberg has given the closest indication yet that they were the real thing.

He said: "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere.

"Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting."

We’re taking that as confirmation that they’ll definitely be something PlayStation or PSP-branded very soon. Even if the broadsheet guesses that it'll land before Christmas seem more and more fanciful by the day.
