Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, is landing on Samsung Galaxy S phones on T-Mobile today at the latest, the carrier has confirmed, bringing a host of smart new features to Sammy’s best-selling high-end smartphone.

With a strange lack of fanfare, T-Mobile announced the plan to push out the update over the air via its support forums yesterday and was aiming to have started the big rollout late last night. If all went according to plan, you should be able to grab it now.

However, T-Mobile’s team also appeared keen to stress that there may be delivery problems that will require owners to use Samsung’s proprietary download solution Kies to get Froyo. That'd mean downloading the Kies suite to your PC/Mac first and then using the software to update your phone.

T-Mobile stated: “The aim was and still is to have the FOTA update available at some point today.

“If for reasons outwith [sic] our control we are unable to have a FOTA update process fully functioning by close of play today, then we will make the update available for download via Samsung KIES tomorrow (Dec 1st)."

As any fule kno’, it's always a good idea to back up any data before starting the update and to use a home Wifi connection to make things faster.

Features that Android 2.2 adds to the Galaxy S include Flash support and speed enhancements to make the fastest Android smartphone so far even quicker.

You’ll also get slicker Google Maps GPS navigation and voice guidance, plus tethering – that is, the option to use your phone as a mobile broadband dongle to get online with other web-enabled devices.

Vodafone Galaxy S users got Froyo earlier this month. Delays to the rollout process are likely to have been caused by network testing and Samsung's efforts to ensure the latest iteration of Android is compatible with its custom skin TouchWiz.

Froyo 2.2 update went smoothly. All working and much better, wireless has better signal, Google maps loads a lot quicker. Some new apps installed by default, haven't had time to go through them yet. Flash 10.1 support is great. BBC iPlayer works fine (only wifi). Overall, I'm impressed!
