Microsoft is readying a second major update for launch early next year for the recently launched Windows Phone 7 operating system, according to sources familiar to the project.
The software maker is reportedly planning to make the announcement at the Mobile World Congress in February where CEO Steve Baller is scheduled to give a keynote presentation to mark the first full year since the platform was unveiled.
Microsoft has already confirmed that the first update to the OS is due for release in January and will introduce copy and paste functionality, turn-by-turn GPS navigation and support for Windows SkyDrive.
Now rumours of a second update have surfaced that will reportedly add VoIP calling, enhanced multitasking and video voicemail, plus more robust APIs for use by developers.
Ballmer will have to deliver a rousing speech to rally support behind the platform, which has seen abysmal sales against the likes of Android and the unstoppable iMachines. Analysts at Goldman Sachs predicts that Microsoft’s pie of the OS market is unlikely to reach double-digits.
