The first-ever images of Research in Motion’s (RIM) next smartphone challenger have surfaced online, along with a lavish spec sheet that suggests some may have written off the company at their peril.

Taking its design cues from the Bold range and measuring a trim 10.5mm thin, the Dakota’s standout features include tethering, so you can use it as a 3G mobile broadband hotspot, and a HD video recording enabled five megapixel snapper with flash and image stabilisation technology.

It’s also home to a full physical QWERTY keyboard for text entry and a trackpad (hey, it is a BlackBerry, what exactly were you expecting?), a microUSB port and a 2.8-inch VGA capacitive touchscreen, according to BGR.

Naturally, it’ll run RIM’s latest, social networking operating system OS 6.1 out of the box, too, and offer the usual array of connectivity options, including WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth.

News of the handset come as the company’s debut internet tablet the BlackBerry PlayBook has been persistently dogged with rumours it will be delayed, apparently due to battery problems.
