Sony Ericsson (SE) has officially confirmed it will be lifting the lid on the Android powered Play gaming phone on February 13th, as the fabled PlayStation phone finally shifts from long-standing tech press fantasy to hold-it-in-your-hands reality.

SE scheduled a press event for that date at the Mobile World Congress some time ago, prompting widespread speculation that this would finally mark the handset’s first outing. A post on its Facebook page has now made that a dead cert.

News of SE’s plans comes amid signs that it's really going all out with a massive marketing campaign for the Play. That impression was compounded by a one-minute promo for the handset airing during yesterday’s Super Bowl – the highest profile, not to mention costliest, advertising spot in US TV.

Expected to land in the UK in April, the Xperia Play’s standout specs include a four-inch touchscreen featuring Sony’s Bravia engine for pin-sharp images, a single-core 1GHz next-gen Snapdragon processor and Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box.

Last week saw the official unveiling of PlayStation Suite – an upcoming PlayStation 'certified' games download store for Play buyers as well as any Android phone running the 2.3 version of the OS or above.
