Xperia X10 users can look forward to an OS bump to the latest version of Android later this year, Sony Ericsson (SE) has confirmed.
Last year, SE disappointed millions of X10 owners when it announced that it had no plans to push out any more platform updates to the handset. That meant buyers were seemingly stuck on the creaky, ageing 2.1 version of the platform – AKA Éclair.
However, it seems that in the interim there’s been something of a change of heart down SE-way. According to a post on the company’s official blog, an upgrade to Gingerbread is now on its way and is expected to land on the handset during the second or third quarter this year.
SE’s change of heart follows a lengthy consumer campaign lobbying for the smartphone manufacturer to play ball with updates.
The post stated: “We have listened to our consumers. In addition, the development of the software for our new 2011 range of Xperia phones gave us a solution that made it possible to deliver Gingerbread on Xperia X10.”
However, it’s not all good news. Not by a long chalk. SE also announced that X10 variants (think: the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro) are being frozen out of the update, as are X8 owners.
The company announced: “Due to the resources available in this special project, we will focus on delivering trade versions of the software. Regarding possible customized operators kit we will have to get back with more information on this at a later stage. But we want to be very clear already at this stage on the fact that some of you may not get this upgrade.
“We have had to prioritize our resources and have therefore focused on delivering the upgrade to Xperia X10.”
