Tablet owners face hugely punitive charges for using their gadgets abroad, a consumer magazine has revealed.

According to a report from Which, surfing the web and downloading and streaming content on tablets such as the iPad and Android powered slates while overseas incurs charges some 1,000 times higher than in the UK.

At its most extreme, this can result in consumers facing a bill running into thousands of pounds for common or garden web use that would cost in the region of £15 if enacted in Blighty.

Part of the problem is that, although caps are in place on how much a carrier can charge for a MB of data, some networks do not impose a maximum spend for holidaying Britons.

Which? also deems a lack of transparency over pricing as a key factor in bill shocks.

Which? mobile services expert Ceri Stanaway says: 'With tablet data roaming costs often so astoundingly expensive, we'd like to see all operators do all they can to keep their customers informed of costs.

“Ideally, this would be - as a bare minimum - both by sending a notification to your tablet advising of costs, no matter where in the world you are, and by making tablet roaming costs explicitly obvious on operator websites.”
