Motorola is working on a business-focussed Android slate with the same takes-a-knocking-and-keeps-on-rocking rugged build as its Defy smartphone.

According to a shadowy insider with knowledge of matters down Moto-way, the as-yet-unnamed slate will team a seven-inch 1024x600 display with the smartphone optimised Gingerbread iteration of Android out of the box.

Completing the still sketchy spec sheet is a 1GHz processor, eight megapixel and 1.3 megapixel snappers, 8GB of onboard storage and Wi-Fi connectivity. There’s no mention thus far whether 3G is on board too.

However, the tablet’s real USP is that, like the "life-proof" Defy before it, it’s robust enough to survive four-foot drops, is water and dust-resistant and works in temperatures between 0 and 50 Celsius.

In keeping with its target market of business users, the tablet also features a peripheral port (presumably principally for adding a physical QWERTY keyboard) and data encryption to keep corporate info out of the hands of sticky-fingered imps.

News of Moto’s plans to add to add a twist to tablets comes after its first Android slate received a less than rabid reception from consumers. According to reports, the Xoom has sold just 10,000 since landing in February.
