Samsung will begin rolling out Android 2.3 to unbranded original Galaxy S phones any day now, it has announced.

The OS bump from Android 2.2 to the latest Gingerbread version of Google’s platform is also coming to Sammy’s budget Android blowers, the Gio and Fit, the Galaxy Mini and the Galaxy Tab in the near future.

UK users are first in line to feel the update love, with Samsung rolling the Galaxy S upgrade out to us first in ‘mid-May’. By our calculations that’s any day now. However, it’s only handsets that have been bought SIM free that’ll feel the love for now. If you bought your phone on a contract deal – and that’s most of you – you’re going to have to wait until your carrier approves it first.

Features it will bring to the handsets and slate include an improved touchscreen keyboard and slicker copy and paste. Users can also look forward to a faster all-round performance, with multimedia content now eating up less of the CPU’s resources, plus support for more powerful 3D Graphics enables an enhanced mobile gaming experience.

Samsung stated: “The Android 2.3 upgrade will start with Galaxy S in the UK and Nordic countries from mid-May, and gradually rolled out to other European markets, North America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, Africa and rest of the world according to the regional plan.

“The upgrade will be available via Kies, Samsung’s device management software. Kies can be downloaded from Samsung’s corporate website.”

In the UK 3 expects to be able to push out Gingerbread to the Galaxy S from the end of May. Vodafone started its update last month, before it was withdrawn by Google for reasons that are not yet completely clear.
