The Android 2.3-toting, sleek Sony Ericsson (SE) Xperia Ray is set for launch in a matter of weeks in the UK, a retailer has confirmed.

The due date for the handset was revealed by Carphone Warehouse, which started pre-registration ahead of its launch. According to Carphone, the Ray is expected to ship to buyers from August.

Unveiled earlier this month, the Ray is a close cousin to SE’s other flagship phone for this year, the Arc, and teams the latest version of Android (slathered with SE's TimeScape custom skin) with a high-end spec sheet.

This takes in an Exmor R 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, touch-focus, face detection and image stabilisation for shake reduction in snaps taken on the move. And it’s capable of 720p HD video recording, too.

Also present and correct is a backlit 3.3-inch Reality display featuring the same Bravia Engine tech you find in Sony’s high end tellyboxes, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor to keep everything running smoother than a Yacht Rock mixtape and expandable memory of up to 32GB via microSD card support.
