Android 2.3 Gingerbread to hit HTC Desire on Three on day of release

HTC Desire owners on Three will be able to download the latest version of Android just as soon as HTC releases it, after the carrier confirmed it won’t be adding network-specific bloatware that usually delays operating system rollouts.

HTC has stated it expects to make a Sense-free, vanilla version of Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, available at the end of July – having previously said it would not be updating the phone due to memory shortages.

And the good news today is that if you’re on Three the OS bump will be up for grabs just as soon as HTC releases it, a tweet on the network’s official feed confirmed.

Three issued the announcement in response to a customer concerned that he’d be twiddling his thumbs while Three tested the update to ensure compatibility with its own services.

Those kind of delays will be all too familiar to owners of Android phones, many of whom have been waiting up to six months for a taste of Gingerbread.

News of developments comes after a HTC relented on its original decision not to make the update available following an outpouring of protest from piqued Desire owners.

Well I'm glad there'll be no bloatware, and that I'll be able to get it quickly, but no sense? I thought they were just cutting back on sense apps, not killing it off all together :(

The Telstra roll out in Australia got rid of Sense completely. I'd heard it was going to be vanilla in teh UK too.

I hope that this update should increase the battery life on my HTC Desire.

No Sense, hooray. I have always hated sense. I went for the Desire because I liked it's design compared to the Nexus one but Sense made it too bloated and removed some cool things the N1 had. Bring the update now :)
