You probably never thought it was possible but it’s here. Android 2.3 – aka Gingerbread – is now available to download for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 handsets across Europe.
Hot on the heels of its announcement this morning that the update would be launching this week, Sony Ericsson has released Android 2.3 for the Xperia X10, downloadable right now via its PC Companion software.
Delicious new features on board the update include Facebook inside Xperia, a series of integrations between your Facebook account with your phone such as contacts and multimedia, USB and Wi-Fi tethering and a new and improved music player. You'll also get a photo widget for instant access to your gallery and, at long last, the ability to sort apps in the order you want on the app tray.
Elsewhere, you can look forward to slicker cut and paste functionality, a revamped on-screen keyboard and performance enhancements for an all-round smoother, faster smartphone experience.
A few omissions have been made, too, to make room for the new additions. MediaScape is no longer part of the TimeScape UI. And operator customisations of the homescreen and the app tray have been given the boot, doubtless to speed up the testing process that often delay updates.
As you can expect, this is for owners of unlocked X10 handsets only right now. However, an over-the-air rollout to contract customers will follow soon. O2 UK has already confirmed to us that the update is scheduled for release this month, so it shouldn’t take much longer.
