Rumblings that a cheap Apple smartphone is on the way have been given fresh credence today in a series of leaked snaps of what’s being claimed is a prototype, cut-price edition of the iPhone 4.
Posted on Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, the images show a handset that looks near identical to the white iPhone 4 but is apparently made with lower grade components as Apple looks to stave off an onslaught from cheap Android phones.
Tinhte.vn has previously leaked photos and videos of the iPhone 4 prototype, which turned out to be real. So we’re not about to question its credibility now.
According to a ‘very reliable source’ quoted by the site, the handset reportedly sheds the glass front and back cover of the iPhone 4 in favour of two plastic sheets. As a result, it weighs less and will, in all likelihood, cost less too.
More interestingly, it will also reportedly run faster than the current iPhone 4, which is strange considering it’s meant to be less expensive. This got us thinking that this could be the mooted iPhone 4 Plus model that’s also been doing the rounds on the rumour mill in recent months.
News of developments comes as all eyes turn to Cupertino as it prepares to announce the hotly anticipated fifth-generation iPhone, which is now looking more and more likely to drop in September.
