Google Maps update Android

Google has updated its Maps application for Android to version 5.8, adding a host of new features and improvements for outgoing fandroids.

Available right now, the update integrates Google Latitude, a location-based service that tracks a user’s location, into the mapping software. Users can now check-in to places of interest to broadcast their whereabouts to friends much like Foursquare and Facebook Places.

They can also contribute towards the creation of new places that haven’t been added yet and upload photos to places they have already visited.

The search functionality has been given a polish, too, and now takes in keywords from descriptions of places, making it easier for users to find what they are looking for in a particular location.

Moreover, the update brings 3D maps to a number of European cities, including London, for the first time. This renders buildings and streets on the map in their actual shape and form, making them more easily recognisable when driving around.

But perhaps the biggest addition of the lot, for Londoners at least, is that the update also brings support for public transport directions to maps courtesy of Transport for London.

So for the sake of example, say you're at King’s Cross and need to get to Oxford Circus. All you need to do is press the ‘Directions’ button and select the Transit option and the app will pull up the quickest route available.
