Nokia N9 dropping August 19th?

Nokia’s next Nseries handset could be with us in just three weeks time, reports suggest, after what appears to be a concrete release date appeared on an Eastern European website.

The product listing for the Nokia N9 appeared on a site based in Kazakhstan and reveals a purported launch date of August 19th, meaning it'll have a window of just a few weeks before Nokia's other key releases for 2011 are expected to land in the form of its first-ever Windows Phone-powered handsets.

Unveiled back in June to an unexpectedly impressed tech press, the N9 is the first-ever commercially available phone from Nokia to run its new proprietary operating system MeeGo.

The N9 also stands out for doing away entirely with front-facing buttons in favour of an all-touchscreen user interface – beating Google and Apple, both of whom are rumoured to be planning something similar, to the punch.

Elsewhere, the N9, which will be available in 16GB and 64GB variants, packs an eight-megapixel Carl Zeiss rear-facing snapper, a secondary VGA camera for video calling and a 3.9-inch OLED touchscreen.

The arrival of the phone comes amid confusion over Nokia’s plans for it. Earlier this month, CEO Stephen Elop hinted that the company plans to abandon the N9 even if sales are strong and focus its energies instead on Windows Phone-powered smartphones.

However, a matter of hours later, Klas Strom, Head of Portfolio Marketing at Nokia appeared to contradict his bosses’ statement via Twitter when he claimed that the phone maker plans to support the N9 with MeeGo updates for years to come.

There is no conflict in those two statements. Nokia can, and apparently will, abandon any plans for further MeeGo devices, leaving N9 as the last one. Still, it will likely keep MeeGo in maintenance mode and offer updates to the single existing MeeGo phone device they offer — possibly without any new features.

Kind of a pity. The N9 is actually quite impressive.

@Johnhkerin , a Windows Phone is always DOA no matter what brand it bears. Meego N9 will be a huge sale as far as my eyes can see.
