Samsung Galaxy Ace Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread rolls out on Three

Three has begun rolling out Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) to the Samsung Galaxy Ace, reports from readers inform us, adding some sweet new features to Sammy’s small but perfectly formed blower.

Updated with breakdown of new features (see foot of article)

According to Three customer and Ace owner Paul Jauncey, the update to Gingerbread is available to download right now via the tech giant’s Kies proprietary download solution.

The update to the newer version of Android (the Ace shipped with the common or garden 2.2 version of the software) might be something a minor upgrade, but it’s well worth having nonetheless.

Among the improvements it offers are revamped copy and paste, a reswizzed virtual keyboard and subtle tweaks to Samsung’s TouchWiz Android custom skin.

You’re also in line for better battery life – perhaps most welcome of all given how quickly modern-day smartphones tear through the juice - and patches for unspecified security vulnerabilities.

As you all know by now, before you update your phone it’s always a good idea to back up your data first. And to ensure you don’t tear into your 3G allowance, it’d be smart to use a Wi-Fi connection too where available.

UPDATE

We've now got a more complete breakdown of what 2.3.3 brings to the Ace (huge hat tip to Paul for this). From the top, then:

  • Slicker UI with no lag
  • Support for OTA firmware updates
  • New download manager
  • Improved cut and paste
  • Faster stock browser
  • Video resolution doubled to 640 x 480
  • Significantly better battery use
  • New icons for power control
  • Improved benchmark test speeds

Just updated via Kies. Notice a few minor changes (icons and speed - which is welcomed warmly!) but unable to find any differences to the keyboard?

Seems a nice enough update. Look forward to improved battery life and very pleased with new OTA update function.
