Orange has begun rolling out Android 2.3 (aka Gingerbread) to the Samsung Galaxy S, it has emerged.

The availability of the OS bump, which Orange hasn’t officially announced, emerged on the carrier’s Twitter feed in response to a customer query from one KimberleeJayne.

Although largely seen as a minor upgrade, Gingerbread brings some smart features to Sammy’s blockbuster phone which very definitely aren’t to be sneezed at.

Chief among these is a revamped virtual keyboard and enhanced copy and paste functionality. You’re also in line for some performance optimisations for a smoother smartphone experience all round.

After a lengthy delay for network testing and a couple of false starts, Gingerbread is now available on most UK carriers, including O2, Three and Vodafone.

However, the fact that the new iteration of the operating system took some six months from its launch to arrive on phones in some cases will add more fuel to calls for Google to clamp down on the custom skins used by third-party phone makers.

The customised user interfaces, which companies use to distinguish their handsets from the competition are the primary reason for the delays.

Google is clamping down on fragmentation, though. We just don't fully know how yet.
