Galaxy Tab 10.1 owners have been promised an imminent OS revamp to bring the company’s TouchWiz custom Android user interface to Sammy’s slate.

Unusually, the Tab 10.1 shipped last month in the US with the vanilla, tweak-free version of Android Honeycomb 3.0 on board.

This enabled Samsung to get its challenger to market with the latest version of the tablet-optimised software present and correct much faster than if it had slathered TouchWiz on top – a move that would have caused delays as Sammy worked to ensure its customisations were compatible with Honeycomb.

Today, the good news, or bad news depending on your take on custom skins, is that Samsung is almost done making TouchWiz work with Android 3.0 and expects to be able to push out an update to bring the skin to the tablet “soon”.

Features owners can expect once it’s ready include a magazine-esque widget to give them “immediate access to weather, social updates, email [and] news” as well as easier access to the most commonly used apps via a Mini Apps Tray.

Also new with Sammy’s re-rub is the handy Swype app for faster touchscreen typing, wireless printing, remote wiping for the more careless among you and compatibility with microSD cards and USB sticks.

A UK launch for the Tab 10.1 is scheduled for next month, presumably with TouchWiz out of the box.
