Android 2.3 Gingerbread lands on HTC Desire (but only for 'experts')

HTC has begun rolling out the latest smartphone optimised version of Android for the original Desire, ending months of waiting for owners.

A scan of the phone maker’s Facebook sites, where it has been keeping users informed of developments, has yet to confirm whether the UK rollout of Android 2.3 (aka Gingerbread) is go.

However, a note on the company’s German Facebook presence reveals that it is available now to our Teuton friends. Albeit, with some major caveats.

From the get-go, HTC is warning that the build, which has been specially created around the Desire’s limited memory and strips away some HTC branded apps, should only be downloaded by 'experts'. And has issued a disclaimer in the event that something goes awry.

Most notably, HTC has highlighted that once the new software is installed, SMS and MMS functionality might not work. That’s quite a risk to take in our book.

And you’ll also be sans apps, including providers custom ones, and data you’ve downloaded. So you may want to invest in a hefty microSD card for back-up purposes before you do anything about updating your handset.

Finally, the update also removes all wallpapers except the default as well as some HTC branded apps and the Facebook app. Wallpapers and the HTC apps will now be downloadable from the HTC site and if you can’t live without Facebook, you’ll just have to re-grab it from the Android Market.

Actually updating your phone is a matter of heading to developer.htc.com and following the instructions. Good luck. And make sure you tell us how to you get on.

HTC has done what it could. If the memory isn't there, what is it supposed to do? Doesn't have to make the update available at all.

Utterly useles upgrade. HTC should have sent out a pure android update without bloatware and Sense. My next phone will NOT! be from HTC, it will be from the Nexus line, but until then I'm putting another rom on my HTC Desire

Utter rubbish, the phone is only a year old and can't handle it's second update. If HTC wants to keep it's customers it should stop spending so much time trying to get new customers and focus a little more on keeping it already paying customers happy.(now 1 less) I feel a little burnt by HTC and will be heading to Apple, I guess it is true that you pay for what you get....... :0( Not happy HTC

A very disappointing outcome for owners of the Desire and I too will seriously think twice about buying HTC again. I may not join the Apple lemmings but consider the other Android variants first.

The limited memory of the Desire is a pain and had I realised exactly how this would pan out, I would not have dived in feet first with the Desire Mk1. No phone or it's v1 sw is without its problems but HTC, you may as well have given us Desire owners the 'bird'.

    Thanks for nothing HTC!

As a owner of a HTC Desire HD im dissapointed in the software!! Sence dont make any sence as it dont work!! gingerbread update has problems & still an issue!!HTC Desire customers complaining about HTC flagship phone not getting simpler software update after months of waiting!!

alot of us HTC customers are on long term contracts!! 2 years is along time!! how many phones will HTC put on the market in the next 12 months!! Me thinks HTC needs to address Software issues for existing customers phones!! I Myself would not recomend an HTC Phone on long term contract for software reasons!! My next phone wont be HTC thats for sure!!
