BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion (RIM) could be about to lift the lid on the latest addition to the Curve range and its first-ever QNX powered handset, after the much-leaked phone failed to show at this month’s launch of new Bold and Torch smartphones.

The invitation to the press event on August 23rd is a mysterious thing all round, making no mention of what RIM has planned.

However, the smart money must surely be on an official showcase for the Curve 9360, leaked snaps and specs for which have been doing the rounds on tech news sites in recent months.

Less of a sure thing, but possible all the same is that RIM could showcase the all-touchscreen Colt – a landmark device running the QNX operating system that will replace BlackBerry 7 platform that powers the Bold, Torch and Curve 9360.

Details of QNX, which is being touted as more user-friendly than its predecessors, remain thin on the ground right now. But we do know that it has been developed with touchscreen devices in mind, unlike BB7 and BB6.

According to early reports, the Colt will also feature a 4.3-inch display – the largest on a BlackBerry by some margin – as well as a five-megapixel camera and a 1.2GHz processor.

Might be a QNX fone before the end of the year, but not this close to them making such a song and dance about BB7. Makes no sense. At all.
