HTC looks set to release a new software update for the Desire HD, along with an upgrade to the latest, official version of Sense 3.0, a leaked ROM suggests.

An official ROM of Android 2.3.5 for the Desire HD has been obtained by mike1986 of the XDA Developers forum, which surprisingly enough contains HTC’s Sense 3.0 UI, despite the Taiwanese giant ruling out an upgrade to the new software due to hardware requirements.

Although to avoid more customer uproar, the phone-maker later confirmed that it would work to incorporate ‘some aspects’ of Sense 3.0 into the handset, it seemed unlikely for owners they would ever enjoy the full UI. An unofficial version of the bespoke interface was later developed from an HTC Kingdom Android Gingerbread build, but it wasn’t quite the same as the real deal.

However, if the latest leak is anything to go by, the smartphone maker has clearly found a way to get around the technical limitations and Desire HD owners could be in for an official over the air update very soon.

Fandroids who have the technical know-how can attempt to upgrade manually at their own risk by following instructions at the XDA forum thread. Those of you with more sense than guts may consider waiting a bit longer for HTC to announce the update officially.

As always, we’ll bring you the gen as soon as we have it.

Look at XDA, Sense 3.0 has been ported to the Desire and other HTC handsets for a long time now. Virtuous Unity for one. I bet that the custom ROMS on XDA with Sense 3.0 will still be faster, and have better battery life than the official HTC release.

3.5 Sense UI is now on the HD (with some initial bugs)...HTC need to keep up.

I'm so excited to get 2.3.5 But i'm too scared to update my self from XDA-Developers. I think i'll just wait and see how it rolls, and then maybe afterwards update to a custom ROM from XDA :-)

@Zenny Update from XDA-Developers is very easy to do, the problem is that still not everything working OK. I have a problem with Bluetooth car-kit. Came back to the original HTC ROM. Anyway Android 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 works and looks really good (except Bluetooth).

What's up with that? Already November and no news about this update. If a news on September 6th say: "could be very soon" and we're now two months later... it doesn't seem very reliable source. :P

This is the reason why Android phones are getting the most viruses. Simply, there is demand for updates, but the Company/Provider just dont bother. This was def my last Android device, this stuff is so yesterday anyway..

@Nobody. It always takes the networks longer to get the updates out because they like to add their own branding (or bloat) to the software.
