Sony Ericsson (SE) has announced that the latest update to the Gingerbread edition of Android currently rolling out to its 2011 Xperia handsets across Europe and other select markets.

SE’s Dutch division confirmed via its official Facebook page that an upgrade to Android 2.3.4 is being seeded out in a phased rollout to its entire 2011 Xperia portfolio. Reports are already pouring in that the update is available to Xperia Arc handsets in various parts of Europe, with more handsets and territories to follow shortly.

The London-based smartphone-maker also confirmed its plans to update its 2011 line-up to the latest Ice Cream Sandwich iteration of Android. The news should provide a sigh of relief for SE fans considering HTC has yet to disclose whether all its handsets released this year will make the jump when the new version of Google's OS lands sometime in mid-December.

SE’s recent track record with Android updates deserves some praise. Since the debacle of the Xperia X10, it’s done a great job at keeping its handsets up-to-date and relevant with the latest software and we’d definitely like to see more of that from all the manufacturers.
