HTC has begun rolling out a new Android update to Desire S handsets in Blighty, as reports start to trickle in of its arrival over the air to units bought both unlocked and on contract on select carriers.

Android 2.3.5, which you’ll know as the Gingerbread variety, comes with an improved Gmail app, bug fixes and performance optimisations. More importantly, it bumps up HTC’s bespoke Sense UI from version 2.1 to the slicker three-point-oh.

Sense 3.0, for the uninitiated, is home to a revamped home screen with a neat 3D animation, a new screen unlock mechanism that allows you to quick launch your favourite apps directly from the home screen and the ability to display content/widgets right on the lock screen, such as the weather, new messages and other live updates.

Right now the software refresh appears to be only available to Desire S owners in the UK who bought the unlocked version and for customers of Vodafone, O2 and Orange. You can manually check if your handset is ready for an update by navigating to Settings > About phone > Software update.

If it’s not yet available on your network or country, fret not, it will be soon. According to our HTC source, the update is being rolled out via an automated server in order of serial numbers of the handsets. This means early adopters should be among the first to receive it.

Desire S on O2. Tried to update to 2.3.5. The update downloaded and verified OK, but the phone has now hung and is good only as a paper weight. O2 no help whatsoever. Any ideas anyone? Hard reset does not work.

Updated on O2 this morning. This took a long time (approx 1hr)and appeared to hang at a couple of stages but it did eventually restart and all is OK. Assume most 'improvements' are under the bonnet.

Mine updated early this morning with no problems. I brought mine over to UK from O2 Ireland a few months ago, had it unlocked and am on 3 here. No problems with update, the sense 3.0 is impressive! Wonder what it'll do to battery life though...

just updated this morning - real nice interface. only issue I experienced was that the phone had no longer had a data connection. FIX - go to settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, access point names. It appears that the update clears out this data...

I'm on Three and still no sign of it... Three won't tell me anything either! Anyone know when they're releasing it?
