Android Ice Cream Sandwich confirmed for Samsung Galaxy S2?

Samsung Galaxy S2 owners can look forward to an update to the latest Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) version of Android, the phone-maker has all but confirmed.

At the official unveiling of ICS this week, Google said that in theory the update will be coming to all phones running Android 2.3, bringing cheer to Fandroids everywhere.

Since then, however, HTC issued a somewhat opaque statement revealing that it is still assessing whether to bring the new Android iteration to its handsets, possibly leaving some of its best-selling Desire kits out in the cold.

That raised the prospect of other Android phone manufacturers, such as Samsung and Sony Ericsson, also potentially deciding not to update their smartphones.

Happily for Samsung Galaxy S2 owners, though, it now looks like they're almost certainly invited to the party after all.

Responding to S2 users’ enquires for a timeframe for the upgrade via its Twitter presence, Samsung UK said there currently is “no official date” for when it plans to make ICS available.

However, the fact that Sammy is even entertaining questions about ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ the update is coming suggests that to us that it’s definitely on the way. Even if, by the sounds of things, owners could be kept waiting a fair old while.

Debuting on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the tasty new iteration of Android blends the pick of the features from the tablet-optimised Honeycomb iteration of the OS with the current-gen Gingerbread smartphone variant.

They'll wait until sales of the Galaxy NExus die down until pushing it out. Makes sense commercially, I guess. But they won't die down for a LONG TIME.

@Wee Dram although Samsung may push out ICS in due course there will also be the glacial wait for the various networks to push out customised versions and tests on their networks.

I happen to want to buy an S2 over a Galaxy Nexus, but I want Ice Cream Sandwich. I don't want the lower spec camera, or the lack of Micro SD card (just recently bought a 32Gb Micro SD) so the Nexus Prime isn't looking like something I want. The S2 has better styling IMHO anyway. By holding off the ICS announcement I don't know what phone to go for.

@Matthew Samsung will make ICS available for the S2, I'm sure. But like Tf says you're probably looking at a wait of at least five months on UK networks. Custom skins and bloatware, eh? Don't you just love 'em? LOL

@Matthew I'm in exactly the same boat. I think hardware always wins over software in the end. I'm still going to s2. note is a giant and nexus camera sucks.

Isn't the Galaxy S2 Samsung's flagship? Ice Cream Sandwich should be available immediately for it. Otherwise what's the point getting the Galaxy S3 next year? If it's a flagship but doesn't get treated like one...
