Android Ice Cream Sandwich ruled out for HTC Desire range?

The just-unveiled Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android (aka Android 4.0) may not be coming to some of HTC’s best-selling smarties, a statement from the phone-maker suggests.

Google lifted the lid on the new iteration of its platform yesterday. Melding the choicest features of the Honeycomb tablet-optimised version with the Gingerbread edition for smartphones, Ice Cream Sandwich brings a smart new multi-tasking interface with slicker notifications and widgets to Android phones, as well as revamped takes on native apps.

But if you’re an HTC Android phone owner, you’d best not get too excited just yet.

A statement from the HTC issued today very firmly avoids committing to bringing Android 4.0 to its devices, stating only that it is “currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans”.

More ominously, HTC also says that it won’t bring Ice Cream Sandwich to smartphones, such as the Desire HD and Desire S, if it feels that an update could compromise their usability.

HTC states: “Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone’s unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel.

“While our goal is to upgrade as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phone’s performance and usability first.”

News of HTC’s Ice Cream Sandwich strategy comes after the company encountered huge problems updating the HTC Desire to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) earlier this year.

The issue is believed to have been caused partly by the resource-hungry Sense Android custom skin that features on HTC phones, as well as the handset’s comparitively underpowered processor when stacked against newer kits.

I really don't see any issue here yet... The quote is " it feels that an update could compromise their usability". Well I wouldn't expect any phone manufacturer to put out an update which buggers up the phone.

@Noomini Noo Because if Samsung and Sony Ericsson can get it out to thieir fones without harming usability, HTC shd be able to as well. Not good enuff.

Great, so my 14 month old HTC desire is now pretty much guaranteed to get no more OS upgrades, ever. IPhone for me next time, at least the devices get supported fairly. Android is way too confused. Until they make vanilla OS available on all devices it won't get any better. HTC FAIL.

@Craig Then you should root your desire and flash cyanogenmod, as I did ;) best decision ever

It just means I won't buy HTC again. I like my phone, but part of the reason people buy Android instead of IPhone is that it's less controlled, you can update ect. If HTC just makes their phones locked into a certain OS, while other manufactures don't, well why buy HTC ever again?

Cyanogenmod is good but it is lacks sense UI, which is the reason why HTC is worth being more expensive than other android phones. but Cyanogenmod will probably be the first to provide Icecream Sandwich to Desire HD. that is if it was possible anyway (lets hope so).

I think that it is unlikely to see 4.0 on current models like Desire HD, not because of "hardware limitations", but as a deliberate action in the hopes of getting people to dump those phones and BUY newer models. This is all about the bottom-line people. EVENTUALLY, they MAY decide to slap on 4.0 to older devices after the execs are "satisfied" with their sales.

Forget Cyanogenmod, Oxegen is the way forward, as close to vanilla as possible, fast and stable. Works great on HTC Desire, and plans to update to 4.0 http://forum.oxygen.im/

Agree HTC solely after bottom line profits, and stuff all the loyal customers that bought the flagship desire HD. Boycott them and don't buy their products that will make them think twice about THEIR customers. Better still root your phone and wait for the clever developers at xda to cook a custom ROM, these guys do amazing things just look at the latest RCMix Runny v4.0 and all the custom tweaks it has included.

As long as you rooted your phone, you shouldn't be too worried about that. There'll almost definitely be lots of customs ROMs based on ICS. I'm using Revolution HD, its GUI is 99.9% stock plus you get all the useful under-the-hood tweaks. So you don't really need an offical OTA 4.0 from HTC.

Who needs official updates from hTC? Devs at xda-developers are way better at making ICS roms than anyone else. Don't worry fellow HTC users, for xda-developers will save our skins.

Poor show HTC. I've just gone from a HTC brand advocate responsible for at least 30 new HTC customers to a brand detractor. I will go out is my way to warn others just how shoddy HTC is with existing customers. #droidrage

The HTC Desire was not included in Gingerbread originally and will not get ICS, but the Desire HD is still open for upgrade options. It is also powerful enough to run ICS and HTC Sense. It does appear that HTC is pushing ICS to the Desire HD (at least from what I gather on the message boards). I will probably avoid HTC next time I get a smartphone though.

You lot are way too picky, I have had upgrades from 2.1 to 2.2 and 2.3 on my Desire, which is better support than any phone I've ever had in the past.

Anyone moaning that Sony support their phones better really does surprise me, as they are legendary for never updating most of their phones, and for introducing the idea of using older Android versions to segment the market and delineate cheaper handsets.

a HTC Sense phone with 2.3 is likely to be a better phone than a Sony with ICS anyway, imho.

WHAT THE HECK?! Why does OS system 'Ice Cream Sandwich' not work on HTC Desire range?!!!! I only got my HTC a couple of months ago and I've been waiting to see when the OS came out and now I've only just found out that it DOES NOT WORK on my phone!
    Hughhh.....

Idiots here who keep saying "HTC Fail" "I won't buy HTC again" are just morons, I have a Desire HD and the day I got it, I rooted it and flashed CM7 and now i'm on Sense 3.5 with Radio 26.14 and Lordmod CFS Kernel, most of you won't understand what that is, but basically, it means I will get longer battery life, and have more control over my phone and I can get Ice Cream Sandwich off the developers at XDA when I feel they've made it stable enough for a daily driver.

Go away and learn how to root your HTC device and flash a new rom/kernel/radio before complaing how your HTC device is becoming a brick.

Total nonsense. If you root your HTC, even the older Desire model, you can have whatever android system you want and the phones work perfectly, if not better without all the carrier bloatware!

If you want to make the most of your phone and don't mind voiding the warranty, get it rooted. It's tricky but worth it. Thanks HTC for making these incredible phones but screw you for trying to limit their functionality so you can release an "upgraded version" that will supposedly handle updated systems better.

We are not as gullible as you may think. Sometimes smart people own smartphones.
