The latest Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) iteration of Android could be available for the Samsung Galaxy S2 in January next year, a Twitter hint suggests.

Gaurav Hasabnis, an industry analyst and contributing editor of Fonearena.com posted on Twitter: “Something gonna come in Jan 2012. #sgs2 users gonna rejoice!”, followed by a second tweet: “Soon Mali400 gonna be in full use.”

For the uninitiated, Mali 400 is the name of the GPU (graphics processing unit) on the Samsung Galaxy S2. Rumours are doing the rounds that Ice Cream Sandwich will utilise the processing prowess of high-end smartphones better than any previous versions of the platform, which could mean the good news our man is referring to could very well be the update.

Adding further credence to the speculation is the fact Samsung last week all but confirmed its intentions to upgrade the Galaxy S2 to the upcoming OS refresh in response to a customer query, while Google product manager Gabe Cohen revealed that ICS should ‘theoretically’ work for any 2.3 device and the Galaxy S2 fits the billing to be amongst the first to receive it.

Features on board the tasty new OS include a UI redesign, enhanced multitasking similar to that on Honeycomb, a new screen unlock mechanism that uses face detection technology, updated versions of native apps and much more.

Ice Cream Sandwich will make its long-awaited debut on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, unveiled last week, when it lands worldwide sometime in November.

Stay tuned for more news and announcements as they happen.

@Ashik: If you meant whether it will have zero shutter lag, then yes, that will most likely be the case.

@Amit: If you bought the Galaxy S2 off contract, you should contact your network for an ETA on the update. If you bought it unlocked, you should receive it as soon as soon as Samsung releases it via its Kies application.

haha, conflicting reports. December 2011 or January 2012 which is it? December 2011 seems false, especially the bit about the HTC Evo 3D.
