Samsung Galaxy Nexus display bests Galaxy S2, but still not as good as iPhone 4S

The year’s most anticipated Android handset, the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Nexus, still lags behind the iPhone 4S in the quality of its display and is not the sharpest even amongst its Android peers, a study has found.

A pixel density comparison by AnandTech of some of the leading smartphones in market reveals the Galaxy Nexus has an ‘effective pixels per inch’ density of 315.83, the highest of any Android kit out there. However, despite this it still falls below the iPhone 4S’s 329.65ppi.

More worryingly, its ‘subpixel’ density, which relates to the red, green and blue, and other colour subpixels for things like anti-aliasing, which affects the sharpness of text, for example, is lower than the likes of the Motorola Droid and Atrix 2.

This is apparently due to the fact the Galaxy Nexus uses PenTile technology for its Super AMOLED HD display (where HD simply means it has a 720p HD resolution), whereas Galaxy S2 rocks a Super AMOLED Plus display, where the 'Plus' part of its moniker refers to the superior RGB Stripe tech it packs.

Although the Galaxy Nexus still bests the Galaxy S2 with a 414.33 subpixel per inch density, it’s taken to the cleaners by the iPhone 4S, which boasts a whopping 613.32 sppi.

What does that mean for prospective buyers? Well, you’ll still get one of the best displays available on an Android phone. If you’re impressed by the clarity of the Galaxy S2’s screen, you should be more than happy with the Galaxy Nexus. However, for the time being, it’s Apple’s iPhone 4S that’s still in pole position for best smartphone display.

Doesn't matter. It's still more than good enough and Android is a much more powerful and versatile than iOS will ever be.

"it’s Apple’s iPhone 4S that’s still in pole position for best smartphone display" . Pixel and subpixel density only. Screen Size is miniscule the worst size for a high-end mobile. Its more like at the last position in 2011

iPhone may have the best screen but Galaxy Nexus has the best operating system.

Well, that's just a stupid comparison... Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S2 both use the Amoled technology, which is better in most situation than the IPS technology used on the iPhone 4 and 4S display... And as a display quality is not only in the pixel or subpixels density but also (and mostly) in the colour, the contrast, the light and the consommation, the Galaxy Nexus' screen is more than probably better than the iPhone one... Plus, as Brian above me said, the iOS is getting old, while Android just keeps growing.

Yes it is important to get to the bottom of the screen technologies. The bottom line is that there high pixel densities are not human discernible. The larger, brighter, more efficient Nexus is clearly ahead.
