Apple’s iPhone has outsold the Samsung Galaxy S2 for the first time in months, snatching top spot in the UK in the lead up to Christmas.

Stats collected by research firm GfK revealed that the iPhone 4S shifted record numbers in the holiday spending spree, becoming the highest-selling smartphone in the UK in the four weeks leading up to December 9th.

Better yet, of the top 15 handsets sold in the first week of December, five were iPhone variants – including the iPhone 3GS which launched two and a half years ago – accounting for 37 per cent of sales.

The Galaxy S2 came second having dominating the charts for the better part of the year, but still sold phenomenally well according to numbers seen by the Financial Times.

The same can’t be said, though, for the Nokia Lumia 800, which launched last month amid much fanfare. Espoo’s debut Windows Phone effort has failed to live up to analysts’ expectations with sales forecast for the current quarter reduced from two million to just 800,000.

Surprisingly enough, BlackBerry models still managed to grab three of the top ten spots, largely thanks to its popular Curve range. However, its flagship kit, the Bold 9900 failed to make the cut, a sign that Research In Motion’s grip on the corporate market is starting to slip as more and more users switch to iPhone and Android as their work phones.

@Kevin Jones Why would you want to downgrade to a sub-par phone that can't even run on 4g?
