More and more Android and BlackBerry phone owners are deserting the platforms for the charms of Apple’s walled garden, a study into iPhone 4S buyers reveals.

According to a survey conducted by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIPR), 36 per cent of those buying the iPhone 4S towards the end of 2011 previously owned phones powered by rivals such as Android, webOS and BlackBerry 6.

That was double the number of cross-platform migrations noted at the launch of the iPhone 4S in September when the figure was 18 per cent.

The shift in loyalties comes despite the muted response the 4S received from some seasoned tech watchers, who damned it as a disappointing iterative update.

The study nonetheless jarred somewhat with uSwitch Tech’s own recent study into consumer smartphone trends for the four weeks leading up to Christmas, which revealed that Android handsets continue to dominate mind and market share.

Of the top ten phones in the uSwitch Mobile Tracker for December, eight were powered by Android, with the top spot occupied by the Samsung Galaxy S2 for the eighth consecutive month.

Pretty simple math. If android is activating 500,000 handsets a day as is claimed and Apple is only selling 180k a day then even if 100% of those people came from android they would still be outselling apple.

    The two aren't mutually exclusive.
