Sony’s debut Android smartphone, the Xperia S, will go on sale in the UK in March, it has been confirmed.

Preorder price for the SIM free unlocked version of the handset has been set at a reasonably wallet-friendly £429.99 (inc. VAT) by online vendor Ebuyer, followed by £449.99 and £467.99 on Play.com and Clove respectively.

Clove plans to be the first to have the phone in stock on March 5th, with Play to range it on March 9th and Ebuyer on March 12th.

For those looking to circumvent the one-off outlay, Three, O2, Orange and O2 have already confirmed they will be offering the handset on a range of contract options. Phones 4U, meanwhile, will have exclusive rights on the white version of the kit.

Home to a 4.3-inch ‘Reality Display’ panel with a native 720p HD (1280 x 720) resolution, the Xperia S is the most powerful smartphone yet sporting the Sony brand name, courtesy of a brawny 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual core processor.

Also on board is a 12-megapixel rear-mounted snapper that shoots in 720p, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel cam for video calls.

Alas,, it will run the slightly dated Gingerbread iteration of Android rather than the latest Ice Cream Sandwich release. However, its flagship credentials should ensure it’s one of the first in line to receive an upgrade when it’s finally available.

Stay tuned for more news and announcements on the Xperia S in the weeks to come.
