A widely circulated photo purportedly showing Microsoft Office running on an iPad was a hoax, it has been claimed.
Published in News International's The Daily, the snap was accompanied by a writer’s impressions of a work-in-progress version of the software, ahead of its imminent submission to the App Store.
So far, so plausible, right? And a major scoop for the iPad-only newspaper too, we're sure you'll agree.
Not so, says Microsoft. According to the Redmond software giant, the Daily's report was “based on inaccurate rumors [sic] and speculation” and isn't to be trusted. The image that accompanied it was also dismissed as a mock-up by a spokesperson.
The Daily’s 'scoop' caused a stir in tech circles principally because it was widely thought that Microsoft would reserve its suite of Office software for Windows 8-powered tablets. Initially, anyway.
For its part, The Daily has denied using a falsified image and claims it was treated to a show and tell of the app’s versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint by a Microsoft rep.
Interestingly, Microsoft would not be drawn on whether it had plans to bring Office to iPads at some stage, suggesting that it could yet happen.
