The iPhone 5 could be the first Apple handset to feature a new dock connector, it has emerged.

According to iMore, Apple is to replace the dock connector that’s been in place since the first smartphone with a more compact, so-called micro version.

The move is aimed at freeing up more space for ‘critical components”, such as a larger battery, and reflects Apple's gradual severing of the umbilical chord between the iPhone and users' computers via the launch of iCloud and AirPlay.

Apple came in for strong criticism from tech sites and the mainstream media alike over perceived shortcomings of the iPhone 4S’ battery longevity.

iMore’s Rene Ritchie states: “The dock connector as it exists now is a relatively big component that takes up, while not a lot of space compared to the entire assembly, a lot of space compared to the difference between mini and micro SIM.”

The move would nonetheless not be without complications for the tech giant. Not least because it would render thousands of iDevice peripherals across the globe incompatible with the iPhone 5.
