Speculation that Samsung is delaying the Samsung Galaxy S3 has been confirmed today, dashing the hopes of legions of Fandroids hoping to get their first glimpse of it this month.

The S3, by common consent the year’s most anticipated Android smartphone, was widely expected to show its face at the Mobile World Congress, taking place this year between February 26th and March 3rd in Barcelona.

That has looked increasingly doubtful in recent weeks, however, with supply chain leaks suggesting that Sammy could opt to postpone the S3 until demand for the iPhone 4S dies down.

Today, Samsung confirmed what we’d been fearing. In an official statement, the company said that although it will be “introducing and demonstrating exciting new mobile products at Mobile World Congress 2012”, the S3 definitely won’t be among them.

Samsung added: ”The successor to the Galaxy S2 smartphone will be unveiled at a separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.”

The move is thought to be aimed at giving the S3 the kind of launch platform that marks it out as a so-called 'hero device' and garners the kind of column inches usually reserved for new Apple handsets.

Features of the S3 remain wholly under wraps right now. But conjecture among tech sages suggests we could be in for a kit packing a 3D screen, a quad-core processor and a 12-megapixel camera.
