Instagram - the incredibly popular photo sharing app on the iPhone - will soon be launching on Android devices, the company has officially announced.

Speaking at a South By Southwest (SXSW) panel on Sunday, co-founder Kevin Systrom revealed that an Android version of the app is on its way “really soon”.

Teasing a working version of the app running on an Android phone, he dubbed it "one of the most incredible Android apps you will ever see," adding "it's extremely fast".

Voted by Apple as the App of the Year in 2011, Instagram has quickly become an ubiquitous name with 27 million registered users in 16 months of existence on iOS, up from 15 million in December last year.

Systrom went onto emphasise that the Android edition may in some ways be even better that its iOS counterpart, stating that the Instagram team had been "working hard on making this one of the best Android apps you'll ever see".

"When I say superior I just mean it's really, really fast," he explained.

"The more we work on this stuff, the more we learn and the better it gets for everyone."

Alas, a confirmation as to when the app might hit the Android Market – sorry, we mean ‘Google Play’ – wasn’t given. With any luck it will arrive on time for some sunny snapping this summer.
