The fabled Google Nexus tablet will finally make its debut next month, ending what feels like years of speculation that the search giant is set to extend the Nexus smartphone brand to slates.

According to DigiTimes, the as-yet-unnamed slate will be manufactured on Google’s behalf by ASUS and go on sale in July.

Shipments of up to 2.5 million units of the Nexus tablet, which is rumoured to rock a quad-core TEGRA 3 processor and a seven-inch screen, are expected by the year’s end.

Assuming that translates to sales, it would make the tablet one of the best-selling Android tablets so far, with only Amazon’s similarly proportioned Kindle Fire as its only really viable rival.

For the most part, specs are firmly under wraps. But earlier rumours suggest it will be Wi-Fi only to keep costs down and ensure it comes in at the sweet spot price point of under $200.

News of Google’s plans for the Nexus brand come amid speculation that this year will also see the release of five Nexus smartphones.
