Apple iPhone App Store

The App Store continues to trounce Google Play for revenue, despite huge growth for the search giant’s download store in the last 12 months.

According to a study conducted by App Annie Intelligence, Apple’s apps outlet pulled in four times as many sales as Google’s official Android equivalent.

However, the gap between the stores is getting less marked, it seems. The research company also found that since January, revenue accrued by Google Play has grown by 311 per cent and by 17.9 per cent in the last month alone.

Conversely, the App Store’s revenues have grown by a comparatively moribund 12.9 per cent since the start of the year and by just 0.7 per cent in the last month.

Bertrand Schmitt, CEO of App Annie, said: “The gap between global revenue on iOS and Google Play is still there

"But the gap is shrinking every month, creating more opportunities for publishers to generate significant revenue growth in several countries on Google Play."

Japan accounts for the highest proportion of Google Play revenues, with 29 per cent. That compares with 26 per cent in the US.
