EE and Vodafone have officially announced plans to offer customers free Wi-Fi on the London Underground, after agreeing a deal with Virgin Media for use of its infrastructure.

Under the terms of the deal, rumours of which had been rife for some time, EE, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone customers will be able to surf the web over the network for no extra charge from early 2013.

Confirmation of the carriers’ plans comes as Virgin Media announced it is also to launch a pay as you go service, which will available to all. Would-be users will be able to choose from monthly, weekly and daily passes, starting from £2 a day.

And making it a triple whammy of Virgin Media news, the network operator also announced that 20 more stations will be added to the Tube Wi-Fi network from December. A further 28 will be brought online from early next year.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said: "Wi-Fi on London Underground has been an incredible success with over 700,000 people already online and a remarkable million sessions every day.

"We're rolling out the service to reach even more stations throughout London, from Camden Town to Clapham Common and, thanks to our partnership with EE and Vodafone, the majority of tube users can stay connected for no extra cost."

Virgin Media originally planned to operate the network solely for the duration of the London Olympics, before its popularity engendered a strategy rethink.
