Microsoft Surface official

Microsoft has officially confirmed that its Windows 8 powered Surface Pro tablet will have about half the lasting power of its Surface RT sibling.

In response to a customer query on Twitter, the Surface team has revealed that “Surface Pro will have approximately half the batter life of Surface RT”, despite packing a larger 42.5Wh battery compared to the RT's 31.5Wh.

Sure, it also features a more powerful processor and a higher resolution display, too, and runs on the ‘full’ Windows 8 operating system that’s compatible with all the apps the RT isn’t. But even compared to most ultrabooks, that’s still a rather disappointing battery life.

Obviously it would be unfair to compare the Surface Pro with conventional tablets - and it shouldn’t be, anyway, given it’s so much bulkier than most slates on the market. But if the tablet form factor was meant to be one of selling points, then it’s going to have a tough time convincing punters at a price point starting $899.

With the lacklustre reception of the ARM-based Surface RT, Microsoft can’t afford for the Surface Pro to be a failure, especially given the massive marketing budget it has set aside for the device.

Release details of the Surface Pro or even when it might be available to pre-order have not yet been revealed, but we’ll bring you all the gen as soon as we have it.
