2012 became the year of the network underdogs last night, as Tesco Mobile and Three triumphed as the biggest winners of the uSwitch Mobile Awards 2012.
Tesco Mobile scooped five out of nine gongs at the event at Circus London including Best Value for Money in both the Pay As You Go and Pay Monthly categories, Best Customer Support, Best Network Coverage and Best Perks and Freebies.
Three retained its crown as Best Network for the second year running and was also voted Best for Roaming by uSwitch customers. It scored a hat trick with the Fastest Network award for delivering consistently super-fast speeds on the uSwitch 3G StreetStats app.
Among manufacturers, Apple and Samsung were tied with two awards each. The former bagged Best Design and Most Easy to Use Phone for its innovations on the recently launched iPhone 5, while the latter edged out HTC and Sony Ericsson to claim Best Use of Android and was voted Best Manufacturer of the year, courtesy of the best-selling Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy Note 2.
In the Judges’ Choice category, voted by a panel of industry experts, Carphone Warehouse was named High Street Retailer of the year, while rival Phones 4U took home the honour of Best Online Retailer.
Ernest Doku, communications expert at uSwitch.com, said: “Tesco Mobile has seriously upped its game to win the majority of People’s Choice Awards, many of which are to do with customer support and value for money – which sets them apart in the current economic climate.
“When it comes to their mobile, it’s vital that consumers get the biggest bang for their buck. Yes, it’s important to people that they can take great photos and access the web on the go, but fancy features fall flat when poor network coverage and expensive rates make the basic functions of calling and texting difficult.
“Innovation stands out. Three was the first network to bring unlimited data to UK customers and is now leading the way with roaming abroad. Brits know what they want and our awards show that consumers recognise great products and services when they see them, and vote with their feet and wallets too.”
