Sony Mobile has officially lifted the lid on its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z, as it bids to mount a stronger challenge to its Android rivals and Apple.
Unveiled yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the Xperia Z is home to a positively drool-worthy array of specs, making it inarguably the Japanese phone-maker’s most avant-garde handset to date.
Leading from the front is a five-inch Reality display with a full 1080p HD resolution that not only rocks Sony’s latest Mobile Bravia Engine 2, but also packs a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio and a staggering 443 pixels per inch (ppi) density that handily outshines the iPhone’s Retina display (326ppi).
Flip it over and you’ll be equally impressed by the 13-megapixel camera that comes with a new Exmor RS sensor designed to perform even better in low-light photography and is the first smartphone shooter to offer HDR video recording.
Ticking over in the background is a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, teamed with 2GB of RAM and 2,330mAh battery that Sony claims can last up to nine days of use (we’ll be putting this to test in our review).
On the connectivity front there’s pretty much every option under the sun (the relevant ones anyway), namely Near Field Communication, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, microSD and, for the first time ever on a Sony handset, 4G LTE for super-fast mobile internetting.
All this is crammed into a super slim casing that measures that 7.9mm thick. Better still, it's resistant to water, dust and scratches, too, thanks to tampered Gorilla Glass on front and back and a skeleton frame structure.
The Xperia Z will land in the UK in March and other territories before the end of Q1. Pricing is still under wraps but should be revealed imminently as networks and vendors confirm availability. Stay tuned.
